Survival Guide to Perugia
10 things you should know the moment you arrive
Just landed in Perugia with your backpack full of dreams, offline maps, and a bunch of “how do I survive here?” questions? Don't worry, we've got your back! Here are 10 essential tips to help you settle in and enjoy the best of your Erasmus experience in this charming hilltop city.
1. Escalators are your best friends
Perugia is full of steep climbs and stairs, but there’s a solution: escalators! You’ll find them around the city center and they’re completely free. Don’t be shy, use them and save your knees!
2. Yes, the MiniMetro is a real thing
That small red futuristic train? It’s not a toy, it’s the MiniMetro. It connects the main bus terminal at Pian di Massiano with the city center in just a few minutes. Fast, clean and super scenic!
3. The city center is... the center of everything
Living in the historic center is incredibly convenient, you’re close to the university, supermarkets, cafes, and most ESN events. If you’re staying in Elce or Monteluce, no worries: you’re still just a short walk away from the action.
4. Get your ESNcard ASAP
This little card is your golden ticket to the Erasmus world. It gives you access to trips, events, discounts and much more. Trust us, you’ll use it more than you think!
5. Meal times are sacred (and late)
In Italy, lunch is usually around 1 PM and dinner after 8 PM. If you're used to eating early, prepare to adjust. And for late-night cravings, kebab spots are your best friends.
6. Driving? Maybe don’t.
If you're thinking of bringing a car, think again. Parking in the city center is a nightmare. Public transport works well and will save you the stress (and parking fines).
7. Learn Italian by living it
People will help you in English, but don’t be afraid to try speaking Italian, mistakes and all. It’s the best way to learn. Bonus: the University for Foreigners offers free language courses!
8. Shops close early (and Sundays are tricky)
Supermarkets and most shops close around 8 PM. On Sunday afternoons, many places are closed. Plan ahead, and always keep a backup pasta stash just in case.
9. There’s a bar for every mood
Whether you want to study, party, chill, or socialize, there’s a café or bar for that. Start your discovery from Piazza IV Novembre and follow your vibe (and your new friends).
