17 January is a special date for lovers of good food all over the world: Pizza Day. Pizza, born in the busy streets of Naples, has become a global phenomenon, bringing with it the tradition and flavour of every region. This special event is an occasion dedicated to honouring Italian tradition and gastronomic excellence. The date was chosen to commemorate 1889, the year when pizza maker Raffaele Esposito prepared a pizza in honour of Queen Consort Margherita of Savoy during her visit to Naples, an event officially documented and considered the point of origin of this delicious tradition.

World Pizza Day has several objectives, going beyond culinary celebration:

  1. Promoting Italian art: spreading knowledge and appreciation for the art of creating authentic Italian pizzas.
  2. Celebrating unity in diversity: the Italian pizza, with its regional variations, symbolises unity in diversity.
  3. Promote food and wine tourism: promote Italy as a destination for pizza lovers, inviting visitors to discover authentic Italian pizzerias and taste local delicacies.
  4. Spreading Italian culture around the world: spreading knowledge and appreciation for Italian culture, encouraging people to experience authentic Italian cuisine.

On this day, therefore, we invite all international students to try the wide range of variants, from crispy, thin Roman styles to classic, fluffy Neapolitan pizzas, even taking advantage of discounts with local pizzerias via the ESNcard, or even to cook one yourself, remembering the valuable lessons learnt at our Masterchef Pizza. In this regard, we would like to thank once again the University of flavours in Perugia, which made it possible for international students to experience something different, genuine and above all fun.

So today, turn into an Italian thanks to a gastronomic feast. Explore, taste and share the magic of pizza with your international peers, and share your photos and memories. Whether you prefer a classic Margherita or a creative pesto pizza, Pizza Day is an opportunity to delight your palate and expand your culinary horizons. Enjoy!
