International Local Guide Day, established in 1990 by the World Tourist Guide Association (WFTGA) and the International Union of Tourist Guides (ITGA), celebrates the crucial role of guides in the tourism industry. This global day aims to recognise and highlight the vital contribution of tour guides, expert professionals who enrich the visitor experience with detailed information and fascinating stories.
The main objective is to highlight the importance of tour guides in making visits meaningful and memorable. It also aims to promote the continuing education of guides, recognising the need for specialised skills, in-depth local knowledge, language skills and effective communication skills. As ESN Perugia, each year we strive to update our city tours to make them more appealing to students arriving each semester!
The day is also committed to supporting cultural tourism, promoting understanding of different cultures and traditions. Tour guides play a key role in presenting the historical and artistic heritage of destinations to visitors, thus contributing to the preservation of cultural identities. Finally, this day raises awareness on sustainable tourism, educating visitors on eco-friendly travel practices and respect for local communities. The aim is to promote responsible tourism that respects the environment and local cultures.
