Every year, on May 17th, the world comes together to celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT), a day dedicated to raising awareness and fighting against homophobia, lesbophobia, biphobia, and transphobia.

This day is an important opportunity to reflect on the challenges and discriminations faced by LGBTQ+ people worldwide, as well as to promote diversity, inclusion, and respect for all gender identities and sexual orientations.

May 17th was chosen to commemorate the date when the World Health Organization removed homosexuality from the list of mental illnesses in 1990. This symbolic event marked a significant step forward in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights, but despite the progress made in recent decades, homophobia, biphobia, and transphobia continue to be prevalent in many parts of the world.

In many countries, LGBTQ+ individuals are still subject to discrimination, violence, and persecution because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Discriminatory laws, lack of adequate legal protections, and the spread of prejudices and stereotypes contribute to creating a hostile and dangerous environment for many LGBTQ+ people.

However, despite the challenges, there have also been significant advances in promoting LGBTQ+ rights in many parts of the world. More and more countries are recognizing same-sex marriage, adopting anti-discrimination laws, and promoting the inclusion of transgender people. Furthermore, social movements and LGBTQ+ organizations continue to work tirelessly to defend fundamental human rights and promote a culture of respect and acceptance.

The International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia is an important moment to reaffirm the commitment to human rights and to reflect on what still needs to be done to ensure a world where all people can live free from fear, discrimination, and violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Every individual has the fundamental right to be themselves without fear of persecution or discrimination. By celebrating diversity and promoting mutual acceptance and respect, we can build a fairer and more inclusive world for all LGBTQ+ people and for all humanity.

This year, in addition to commemorating IDAHOBIT, we invite everyone to take part in Umbria Pride on June 1st, an extraordinary event that celebrates love, diversity, and equality in the beautiful setting of our city: Perugia. So join us at Umbria Pride and contribute to building a brighter and more inclusive future for all LGBTQ+ people and for all humanity.
